Our June Journeys

What a month we’ve had! We’ve been out and about this month talking to local residents about a range of subjects and we’ve loved listening to residents.

We were at Up For Yorkshire’s Get Stuck In Volunteering Event where we were advertising ways in which people could get involved in Our Zero Selby. The event was fantastic, so lively and dynamic, and it was lovely to talk to people who share our passions and want to make a positive, sustainable difference in their local area. If you are interested in volunteering for our projects, including tree-planting or composting, or if you are interested in setting up a more permanent Selby Repair Café group, please contact us.

We also had a stall at Selby Abbey’s inaugural Eco-Fayre alongside other local sustainability groups advertising the amazing work that they do, including Selby Womblers, Yorkshire Rotters, and Milford Hedgehogs. There were also clothing, toy, and seed swap stalls, so people reduced the amount of items sent to landfill and picked up something they really enjoyed in return. In addition, the Fayre held a local storyteller, Story Joe, who told three stories celebrating British wildlife, from magpies to weasels and mice- so there really was something for all the family!

We helped the Abbey organise the Fayre and they have already expressed an interest in holding another, which we are delighted about. It’s so easy to feel like nobody is doing anything to look after the world around us, but getting so many local organisations and residents together demonstrates how many people do care, and the real impact that collective action has on our community.

Connie went litter-picking with Selby Womblers on a hot day mid-June. The group covered the flyover bridge that takes cars over the railway line, and down by the fire station towards the canal. Despite the session only lasting an hour, the group of 8 picked up 9 1/2 binbags full of litter and some strange finds including a heavy chain and a jar of all-purpose seasoning.

Finally, we were at the Selby Family Funday! The 80s theme was strong and we had quite the stall, including our tree highlighting everything we’ve done so far, our game of Guess How Many Butterflies In the Jar?, and our Community Kitchen conversation. Thank you to everybody who came by and stopped for a chat, and signed up for our newsletter or took our leaflets- every resident who we talk to really counts and makes a difference to the programme.

Thank you also to Selby SCRAP CIC for providing a jar and some of the butterflies for our stall, and to Everyday Enable CIC for helping us set up the stall!
