How and When We Travel

More pedestrianised areas in Selby

Creation of friendly pedestrian neighbourhoods in Selby Town and its surroundings. This project was chosen to reduce localised pollution, encourage exercise, reduce congestion, create a safer town centre, an opportunity for street events, and increase the footfall in towns, which is great for local businesses!

Improve walking routes within the district

Improve the quality of access to footpaths, pavements, street lighting, creation of safe paths from Selby to surrounding villages, and better mapping and signage to inform the community of walking routes. This project was selected to connect rural areas, improve accessibility, and make walking a more viable option by making it safer and easier. Other impacts of this project would reduce emissions, improve physical and mental health, encourage footfall for shops, and improve the feel of the town.

Improve the cycle route network

Improve the safety and reach of cycle paths to create a joined-up network that is user-friendly and pleasant to use. Prioritise cycle paths from residential areas to schools. This project was chosen to promote active travel for local physical and mental health, improve air quality, reduce congestion and increase safety on the roads, reduce cars on the road and encourage new skills for young people.

Improve the reliability & frequency of public transport

Increase people's willingness to use public transport with more efficient and dependable journeys. The project seeks to monitor where there is demand for public transport and look particularly into the rural areas in Selby. The residents chose this project to make people feel more connected and able to access different areas. The aim was to remove cars from the road and work to create new jobs in the area.

Subsidise local public transport

Provide reduced cost or free public transport to improve accessibility, frequency, and inclusivity of use. This project would encourage greater public transport use by making it cost-effective for families and members of the community whilst reducing emissions significantly.
