Donate, Fix, Give, Repeat: The Selby Community Bike Project

If you have an unloved bike taking up space and gathering dust and you’re wondering what to do with it, we have the perfect solution for you!

We have launched the Selby Community Bike Project, a collaborative initiative by Selby Community Furniture Store, Cogs Cycles, and Up For Yorkshire. It was initially imagined as a bike loan project- but we realised that we could make a longer-lasting change to people’s lives.

The bikes are still all donated by members of the public. They are then refurbished by Cogs Cycles, who also runs our Big Bike Revival repair events. Recipients are referred to the Bike Project by trusted community support partners, and are now given a bike with a helmet, a lock, and lights to ensure safe cycling.

The Selby Community Bike Project is proud to announce a successful first three months, having already provided 30 refurbished bicycles to individuals in need within the community. This project aims to provide safe and reliable transport to those who otherwise couldn't afford a bike, empowering them to access work, school, and essential services.

Since its beginning in May, the project has received over 60 bike donations from the community. These bikes have been expertly restored to roadworthy condition by Cogs Cycles and distributed free of charge. Each recipient is also signposted to Bike Repair events run by Up for Yorkshire for affordable maintenance and support.

"We are absolutely thrilled with the impact the Community Bike Project has had in just three short months," says Connor Dunbar, Operations Manager at Selby Community Furniture Store. "Seeing the positive change these bikes bring to people's lives – whether it's enabling them to get to a job interview, attend school, or simply improve their health – is incredibly rewarding. We're making cycling more accessible, promoting reuse and recycling and providing people in the community with a means of transport."

To continue this vital work and meet the growing demand, the Selby Community Bike Project is issuing an urgent appeal for more donated bicycles. The project is seeking bikes of all sizes, including men's, women's, and children's bikes especially, to help a wider range of people get out on two wheels for health, transport, and independence.

How to Donate: If you have a bike to donate, simply phone the Community Furniture Store on 01757 291444 or bring it to Unit 2, Bawtry Road, YO8 8NB.
